Welcome to Beech Grove Wireless High Speed Internet service!
We are pleased to begin providing Internet and email account services (complete with email Spam and Virus protection) to residents and businesses
in Beech Grove. Bookmark and visit us online at www.beechgrovewireless.com to get the latest updates about this exciting new service.
With Beech Grove Wireless, you will experience upload and download speeds from 512 Kbs for Dial-up buster users to 1 Mbs - 3 Mbs (1000 Kbs to 3000 Kbps) for broadband
users which is 5 to 20 times faster than dialup.
What you'll need to get started:
The Beech Grove Wireless network is compatible with most of today's operating systems. Minimum requirements are at least Windows 2000, XP or Vista
for PC users and OS 9 or greater for Macintosh users.
Desktop computers must be equipped with a network interface card (NIC), a piece of hardware designed to allow communication over a network.
Today, most new computers come with a NIC built into the motherboard, thus eliminating the need to purchase additional hardware. Older machines
not equipped with a built-in NIC can have this card installed at a nominal fee.
You can access a 24/7 technical support representative by simply calling

A. First Things First... Checking Your Settings

Installation Highlights
Make sure that you have installed and run a current version of Anti-Virus and Spyware protection software.
This should be completed using your current Internet connection prior to starting the set up process. If you have not had an Internet service
before, complete this step as soon as you are able to visit the Beech Grove Wireless Web site. Do this before logging in or establishing an email account.
Do not visit any other Web sites prior to completing the step.

To ensure your computer's operating system is set up to connect with Beech Grove Wireless, complete either the Windows or Macintosh Operating Systems
sections to properly configure your settings for Beech Grove Wireless.
Ruckus Gateway
- Power, Network, Wireless & Diagnostic LEDs - All lights should be on.
|
- Power Light - Green = On, Out = Off.
- If the power light is off, verify that the power brick is plugged into a live wall outlet. Also check the connection
where the power plugs into the Gateway. Pull the power connector from the Gateway for 15 seconds then plug it back in. If the
light remains out replace the Gateway or power brick.
- Network or LAN Light - Green = Connected, Off = No LAN connection.
- If the LAN light is off, check the network cable connections on the Gateway, on any routers and on the computers network card. Have the
customer unplug and reseat the connectors. Make sure they click into place. The tang on the connector can be bent up to about a 45
degree angle to provide a solid connection. If the tang is broken, the customer must replace the cable or connector.
- Have the customer check the network card by the connector. There should be two lights, a green and an orange. The green is a link light
and should be lit if there is a good connection. The orange will blink when the card is passing traffic.
- If they still can't get a green LAN light they'll either have to troubleshoot it further themselves or arrange for a technician to make
a house call.
- Wireless (WAN) Light - Green = Connected, Off = No WAN connection to outside A/P.
- Make sure the Gateway is in a window facing the nearest A/P, the antenna is pointing up and isn't touching anything like an aluminum
screen. Ask the customer if they have had a connection in the past or if they have moved the Gateway. Have the customer reboot the Gateway
by unplugging the power connector for 15 seconds. If the light still won't come on they may have to replace the Gateway.
- Diagnostic or Air Quality LED - This gives a rough guide as to the quality of the connection between the Gateway and the access point.
- Green Steady - Good Air Quality: A steady Green LED indicates that the current environment will support quality data transmission.
- Green Flashing - Marginally Acceptable Air Quality: a flashing Green LED (on for 0.25 second, off 0.25 second) indicates that the current
environment does not always meet the data transmission standard. While data transmission is possible, the quality will vary.
- Green Intermittent - Bad Air Quality: A briefly flashing Green LED (on for 0.03 second and off for 1 second) indicates that data
transmission is not possible in the current environment. The brief flash also indicates that the device is still functioning.
B. Wireless Reception

Installation Highlights
Positioning of the Beech Grove Wireless Gateway is critical.
1. Place Gateway near a window that is facing the Beech Grove Wireless access point (a map of the access points is available on-line and at City Hall).
2. If you need your computer set-up in your basement, consider the Dual Zone Gateway or installing a router (wired or wireless) to allow the Beech Grove Wireless Gateway to
be placed upstairs near a window facing the Beech Grove Wireless access point.
|
|
Before you begin setting up your Beech Grove Wireless connection, consider the placement of your wireless Gateway. Just like all cell phones or radios,
reception can improve or weaken when devices are repositioned. It's best to place the Gateway on a main or upper floor, preferably near an
exterior wall or window and if at all possible, not in a basement. Very seldom does the Gateway work well in a basement. You may find that
your Beech Grove Wireless signal strength may be enhanced by adjusting the location of your wireless Gateway.

No service? It is likely that your signal is not being received well. The Gateway placement may need adjustment.
1. Is the Gateway near a window facing the radios outside?
2. Try another window on the first or second floor of your house.
If the above two steps do not bring the reception up to an adequate level, you will need a professional installation (for a fee). The
installation will involve connecting the Gateway to an outdoor antenna, or placement of the Beech Grove Wireless Gateway outdoors. Please call the help
desk to arrange this service.

the Gateway, then connect the other end to a power outlet. Connect the enclosed ethernet cable, looks similar to a telephone or modem
connection port cable but it is slightly wider, to the slot in the back of the Gateway. Next, connect the other end of the connect
cable to the network adaptor ethernet port to your computer. (NOTE: if you have more than one network adaptor ethernet port on your computer.
for example, "Net 1" or 'Net 2." select the lowest numbered port available.)

also provides protection between your personal computer and the Internet. These devices generally sell at most electronics stores for about $80
and up. Please Note: Although many routers are virtually "plug-and-play" devices, it is important to protect your router by following the
directions to ensure that these devices provide a secure connection.
For assistance with configuring your Beech Grove Wireless system to function in conjunction with a router, see the diagrams below.
